Pedal Assembly

Post by rparker7 »

I have a 1966 Beetle (VIN 116 742690) which I believe puts it in March 1966. I have the pedal assembly that has the gas pedal attached to the casting along with the brake and clutch pedal. The bottom of the casting is not in geat shape. All the pedals are in good shape. The clutch and brake pedal are cast steel. I have been able to disassemble all the parts except for the gas pedal. The pin seems to be completely corroded into the casting. So here is my question (finally). Is it possible to get just the casting for this set up. I realize that finding a used one is unlikely since it would most likely be in the same shape as mine. All the aftermarket assemlblies seem to come with the stamped steel pedals and I am not sure that this casting would fit with the pedals that I have.

Thanks,
Robert

You should be able to find a decent pedal casting on the samba or ebay or the like. Yours does indeed look pretty rough, but you have to remember, VW sold millions of beetles pre 1966, and from '58 to '66 they all used the same pedal cluster. Your odds on finding a decent replacement are pretty high. You can also just drill out that accelerator pedal pin and get replacement ones from pretty much any of the aftermarket vendors. I like the stuff Wolfsburg West has, it's got all the pins and springs for like 7 bucks.

I just did a quick search on TS for "pedal cluster" in the classifieds and got a page full of hits for 25 bucks and up. They're out there, you just have to dig a little.

I'm not sure exactly when the switch was made, but pre '66 Beetles had the pedal hing at the pan. The hinge was not part of the pedal casting.

I have no solution other than to suggest you look for another pedal assembly. That, or switch to a roller pedal.

BB, yes, that's correct. I think it's Up to 1957 models.
