6v to 12v
I have a 66 vw that I want to convert to 12v. I can't find a good complete kit anywhere. If anyone could help me I would appreciate it. Thanks

It's a little more complicated than just buying a kit. There's the generator, voltage regulator, wiper motor, all light bulbs, horn, flasher relay and even the choke on the carburetor. To do it right, the transmission bellhousing must be clearanced for the larger diameter flywheel. There are those who will tell you to keep the 6-volt starter, but it will eventually chew up the teeth on the flywheel ring gear. So add a flywheel, starter, starter bushing, clutch and pressure plate to the list.
We have two '66 Beetles. One has all the 12-volt modifications listed above, and the other is 6 volt. The 12-volt system is certainly better, but the 6-volt system is adequate so long as you replace your battery cables and buy a 6-volt Optima battery.
