Hairline cracked cylinder heads- repairable?? Is it worth-it?
Hi. I have 2 pairs of twin-port cylinder heads that have hairline cracks either between the valves or going to the spark plug hole. Question- is this repairable (say aluminum welding?) If so, is it worth the hustle or better off discarding the scrap metal guy? It pains to imagine trashing cylinder h...

Hi. Was that the end of the matter?? How did your project end?? Going through restoration jobs as I am trying to gather energy, know and inspiration towards my reostoration undertaking. Hello KKV270. Do restorations ever really end? Nothing further has taken place on the restoration as of late. I g...

Re: Crank case stud pulled
Oh.. really!!!
Well, I managed to do a temporal plugging and using the engine well minus the leak. I don't like the thought that the stud is rather redundant (not really bolting down the head) but that's for a short time as I plan on introducing a type 4 in there very soon.

Re: Compression test results analysis.
I dropped the engine and removed the heads (I wanted to work on an oil leak I suspected was coming through the sleeves). I found that my heads were leaking compression through the head-gaskets. I reinstalled minus the gaskets having lapped the heads and sleeves. Engine cranked immediately. I'll do t...

Re: Compression test results analysis.
Can you imagine I never undertook the test since. I stopped working on the engine...however, I'm gearing towards that. Let me follow the right procedure and get tests. I will revert. Thanks for the follow-up.

Crank case stud pulled
Hi. I have one of those "headaches".. a pulled cylinder head stud that had once been 'sleeved' I am feeling lazy to tear apart at this moment. Other than the leak, I still run perfect. Question, what short term solutions can keep me going say to next year? Is there a way I can fix that wit...

Haha- thank you for the polite correction...Apron. Can you believe it- in all my years of forum world (this being the first), I have never been successful in posting a pic... always too large (off my phone). Well, with your encouragement, I was able to use the jack off my T3 Transporter and a bolted...

Compression test results analysis.
Hi. I have just done my first ever compression test. This has been warranted by an engine I've been working on that has never given me a good performance...however, I also recently changed the combustion chamber and carburetors and performance was even worse despite several tune-up attempts. Did you...

Re: Idiot light connection to a volt regulator
Hi. I have it much thought & was able to figure it out. The dash board light connects to the D+ terminal and not the Df as I did. The D+ terminal is an "equal ground" when the generator is stationery or not at good RPM. When it achieves the RPM, it gives a positive charge which cancels...

Re: Idiot light connection to a volt regulator
Hmmm!!! The generator does charge... but the indicator light doesn't go off... what could I be doing wrong? The cut-out has 3 indicated terminals and a 4th I assume(d) is a ground.... B+/D+/Df.... I connected the light onto the Df terminal together with the connection that comes from the generator o...

Wiper motor/ switch connection
Hi.
I have a mix up and can't figure my way back. I undid my wiper connection (motor and switck).
The switch has pins 31, 31b, 54, 54d. The motor has pins 53, 31 and 53a. What goes where? When I connect as I believe it was, the motor doesn't function... kindly assist.

Flywheel (type 4 engine)
Hi. What material is the vw (& more specifically the type 4) flywheel? I have one that was messed by a previous owner (it came messed with the engine). Seems they'd used it for an engine conversion and then went back to the original- problem is, they welded it back. I'd wanted to get it well-don...

Spark plug thread repair- advice
Hi.
I have a cylinder with the spark plug threads pulled. I was wondering- for our aluminum heads, what would be the best material to use while fixing that section? Some guys say copper- others (my home area) just use what is more available (steel). I'd like to go for the best solution.
Thanks.
