1966 Bug Electrical

Post by bandgeek1 »

Hello everyone!
Ok so I am having some electrical problems with my 1966 Bug.
First off let me add that it is a 12 VOLT SYSTEM, i did not change it, it was 12 volt when i bought it.
So my main problem is basically electrical failure, which means that things that require the battery (radio, fule pump and all that) will STOP.
It happens very randomly, sometimes i will turn on the ignition and nothing ells will turn on, or it will turn on, but flicker on and off for a while, and sometimes i have no problems.
But when i do have problems, it is 100% random, i can be st a dead stop, and the power will cut out, so making turns or anything does not affect it.
Sometimes i will be driving, the power will die, and then the engine will sputter then die.
Now i have a bran new 2276 cc engine in this thing, not installed by a mechanic, so there should be no problems.
The only thing i have done myself as far as mechanics go, is put on a clear distributor cap, and install the radio.
And i do NOT know electrical, so i am at a loss, any help would be very nice.
Thank You!

This sounds like a ground issue to me. I would check all the ground connections and make sure that they are clean and tight. A loose ground can result in the symptoms you are reporting.
