New Bosch Screamer 019 distributor

Post by volksbugusa »

well i finally did..I was so fed up with the flat spot that you get from the original bosch 009 vacuum advance distributor I removed it and placed it on a shelf in my garage...well for the good news i purchased a Bosch cast iron 019 distrubutor from Glenn Ring...WOW what a difference.Timing was set at 32 btdc @ 3000 rpms for full advance. Dwell is at 50,dead idle is set at 900 rpms. This set up with the blue coil was know as the screamer kit.
So yes a little hot rodding for the old girl...So if your car has a flat spot and you dont think you will ever clear it up then the 019 is your ticket...
yes you can use this set up with your 30 pic 1 or your 30/31 carb...

Looking at most of your pictures, youre not running a stock 1300 are you, or have you gone with aftermarket parts on it?

Matt,
With all honesty, is the 1300 powerfull enough to go on the highway, and do light highway travel?

I am running the original 1300 in my beetle with no problems on the highway at all - it doesn't have the fastest pick up in the world (from a dead stop) but it holds its own.

Would it be worth it to go to a set of 1500 on the 1300 case, ore even 1600, would these kill the gas mileage?

max go 1600 single port..It does not pay to rebuild a 1300...when you can go with 85.5..no one is going to know...they slip in the case...it more important to worry about case saves..that is why i told you to go with a short block and build it up..
cheers

I had a 1600 in my last 66 and I'm running the stock 1300 now and I really don't see any difference in gas mileage.

I was just worried as reading some of my books it state that with minor changes and near perfect tuning the 4 cylinder will have an outcome of about 8 mpg, im not willing to make a vw a daily driver for that money

The 1300 engine when it evolved became the builders dream! you can do a little everything with them. line bore for bigger cranks, cams, flycut bigger jugs, but what do you want a hotrod or a vw? A little more power add $150.00 and 85.5's and 8 hours of your time,I've built 4 of them in the last 5 years for different folks and they love them. I've got a spare 1300 case in the barn i'll rebuild someday the same way, before those big bore bolt on kits get any higher priced! they used to be $79.00 when I started. :(

there you go Max! The 85.5 areplenty perky and they won't stress the 1300 case, where the 1600 jugs would. The thing we had problem with the old cases was when they were split to beef him, they inherited an oil leak in the seem. Damn things you couldn't even drive em legally when the speed limit was 55! hell you couldn't shift into 4th without lugging it til you hit 65

eh, yeah, not what I'm quite looking for, I started looking, I have decided to put the 1300 aside, get it rebuilt, but for in the car im going to put a 1776 or larger I believe, due to one fact, the group I will be having to travel across the state with for competitions average about 83 miles per hour, with a top speed of 74, i might have some problems with that
A volksie thanks,
