timing not my cup of tea!!
Timing Set At:: 7.5deg BTDC Static or @ 800-950rpm w/strobe w/vacuum hose disconnected and plugged.
Can someone explain this to me.I need to set double check my timing,
with a strobe light.does this mean i set the rmp at 800 at idle with the vacuum line plugged. then set timing at 7.5 btdc.just want to get a little more zip to the motor.I notice some flat spots!!

Hi Volksbugusa: I looked in John Muir's book and he only has the vacuum line removed and plugged on 1973 and higher models. Therefore I would say adjust the idle and do the timing with everything connected.
On a different note - I had a flat spot on my last 66 and it wasn't related to the timing it was due to the fact that I had a more modern distributor on it - once I went back to the stock set up the flat spot went away.

Another thing to check on your flat spot is the accelerator pump nozzle - if this isn't good and strong you will have a flat spot.
On the timing, without knowing what carb, distributor, etc..you have it's hard to know what we are dealing with. However, you should time it with the strobe with everything the vacuum lines connected, then disconnect and plug the vacuum lines and the timing should not move.

I've been told for many years to static time a VW with a test light with your flywheel at 7.5 tdc or whatever and just turn your dizzy til the light comes on and your done. A strobe is to jumpy for a bug motor and not as accurate.I do all of mine this way. a flat spot could be a vacumn leak on the intake or loose carb or bad gaskets.Just my nickels worth, good luck let us know what you find out,we are never to young to learn something new

JOHN - SCUFFY
scruffy:
I ended up timing the motor using the static timing method. My problem was that the pulley only had one v notch which ended up being tdc.I pulled the number one plug and when she came up all the way it lined up on the v notch and the dizzy was pretty close to the line on the distributor casting lip.So since I had to be 7.5 btdc I went about a 3/8 of a inch on the right side of the v which I am hoping is pretty close to 7.5 btdc.
took the 7.5 btdc line that mark up to the center line on the case.
points where still closed. turned the dizzy to the right every so slight
and the static light came on. I tightened every thing up.. the motor was purring like a kitten.I did add oil to the air cleaner and also went with a metal gas filter rather then the cheap plastic types...the metal gas filter
has a hump on both ends...once you put a clamp on the hose there is no way that it will slip off to cause a fire... I also was able to find a reverse
speedo light switch which is a pretty cool device..once the car rolls in reverse the light comes on.Go forward the light goes off....
John:
I wanted to tell you Terry really knows his stuff..I hope he is the only person working on your car...Thank you for hooking me up with him...
