Oil change change of mind and heart, or oil tech improved?

Post by Elango Velautham »

Hi there,

http://www.edmunds.com/car-care/stop-ch ... 58&msite=w

What do you think? Applicable to our VW bug engines? Any recommendations?

Best wishes,

oil changes

Post by Roadbug »

Good question for the technical bunch. However I change my oil by the visual method (If it looks clean it's OK). I have to qualify that by saying
with 7 cars in the household and 5 of them collector cars, it takes a long time to register even 3000 miles.
I think if it looks dark, that indicates dirt and contamination. then it's time to change it.

I live in Phoenix. I change my oil at 3000 miles or at 3 months if I don't put 3k on the clock. Here, there's constantly so much dust and crap in *everything* and oil doesn't manage much longer than that unless you have your car parked in a garage and hermetically sealed in a plastic bubble. Even my Dailies get oil changes on shorter than dealer suggested intervals.

I change every 3,000 miles. If it takes years to chalk up 3,000 miles then you don't drive your car enough.
