Do I have a 66 or not.
Hello there folks. I've been following this site for a little bit and had a bit of a gander at everyone's rides. And I was underthe assumption that I had a 66' beetle but now I'm not so sure. It's an Australian Bug so it has the solid wheels. It doesn't have the centre heater vent. Rather two slits in the corners of the front window. It's badgeing is 1300 deluxe although it now has a 1600cc. I'll have to get some pics up but for now I hope this description helps. I'm not sure where to locate the vin number or any other identifying marks. What else should I be looking for?

The chassis number is stamped on the tunnel under the back seat, and also on a plate in the trunk.
In Australia, Volkswagen bult the 1962 model right up through 1967, so whether or not it was built in '66, mechanically it's about a '62.
If the first three numbers of the chassis number are 116, it's a 1966. (That's assuming Volkswagen used the same numbering system worldwide.)
