Battery Tender

Post by Roadbug »

Has anyone had any experience using a battery tender on the original 6 Volt battery with the cover on the battery?
I've always replaced the metal cover on the battery under the back seat.
(A friend with an Issetta set his car on fire when a heavy passenger sat
down and shorted the battery out on the seat springs, settting the seat on fire)
I wondered if the tender caused the battery to heat or sweat?
Any experiences Tender users out there?

Battery Tender

I'm really suprised that nobody has tried this and will comment on it.
Sounds like a good idea for 6 volt VW's.

The problem is you can't commonly find one for 6-volts. I'd invest in an Optima battery first.

Battery Tender makes them in 6 Volts. Problem with the Optima is that
it won't fit in the battery box. I've tried th Optima in my VW's but still prefer the original style 6 volt battery sold by NAPA. It allows me to use the underseat area for tools and parts.

Wait, 6 volt optimas fit fine. You can even lay them down sideways. They work awesome.

Also, a board or piece of plastic in the seat bottom will serve to block those metal springs from sagging down and shorting.
