Hello everyone. I am new to the forum, would lie some advice and input.
I have the opurtunity to purchase a 1966 VW Beetle. It is white in color, with a dark red interior. The cars paint and body is in great shape, no rust on the car as far as I could tell. It was undercoated years ago to also protect it. Running boards look good. Solid floors. no tears or holes in any of the interior. All lights, horn, wipers, wiper fluild, etc.. work. The car has brand new tires on it. It does have the original motor in it. 1300cc. The car is also original 6V system. I have not driven it but it starts and idles, and sounds real good. It also has the original manual with it in the glove box.
I am trying to decide if I should pull the trigger on getting it. He is asking 4,500. Thinking I can get him to 4,000.
I can add some pics when I get home tonight.
If I do go with it, should I convert it to 12V?
Thank you all very much. Nice meeting all of you.
George

Gee George, if it's as good as it sounds it's probably a steal at 4500. As far as the 12 volt conversion goes, that is personal preference. I still have the 6 volt system and am fine with it. You will have brighter lights with a 12 volt system and a little more versatility but as I said I am prefectly happy running my 6 volt. Best of luck!

Is the 6V system reliable? just as reliable as the 12V I suppose?
Anything I should change on a 66 that is all original for reliability? My g/f wants to drive the car, and me not have to work on it. LOL
I have a VW trike my father and I built 3 years ago now, and that is 12V, guess I am just used to that is all. I was wondering how hard it is to put a electronic ignition in my 12V trike? How would I know which is the right kit for it? Just a single port 1600cc engine, I want to say maybe a 1969 (The case has the little ribs on it, byt the oil dip stick). single line vacuum advance.
Thanks everyone!!!

Hi, don't know if you went ahead & bought the car or not, but my 2c worth on 6V vs 12V...I ran the original 6V on my previous 65 Beetle for a while, and it did everything it was supposed to do, except if I had to use the windscreen wipers in the rain - that put a serious dent on the brightnesss of the headlights. And forget turning the radio on at the same time.gagallagher04401 wrote:Is the 6V system reliable? just as reliable as the 12V I suppose?
Converting to 12V was an easy DIY job, and a local wrecker threw together a complete kit while I watched. Basically just the alternator/generator, voltage regulator, plus every bulb. Think that was all it took, an hour or two of work at most.
