Birth of the Beetle: The Development of the Volkswagen

Post by jmartini »

Birth of the Beetle: The Development of the Volkswagen by Ferdinand Porsche. Chris Barber. 320 pages. Hard Cover.

This book should really be called "Everything you wanted to know about Ferdinand Porsche and his Design Team". This book explores the roots of Porsche and his design team and goes into great detail on his designs leading up to the beetle. This will be really dry reading but you will not get a clearer picture of Ferdinand Porsche with any other book - so if you are a Porsche buff - this book is for you! Written in collaboration with one of Ferdinand's nephews - Ghislaine Kaes.

This book goes into extreme detail about the development of the Volkswagen itself, while just touching on outside issues, such as Porsche's trips to the U.S., the savings plan, factory development, etc. Hands down the best book on the development of the Volkswagen ever written.

I'll add that it's also out of print, and the price of a copy has skyrocketed!
