This topic is pretty well covered here Lori. Here is a start. In addition to the paint job, 1966 was the first year Bug rims featured five wheel slots to aid brake cooling.

Just search this forum with "rims" and you will get quite a bit.

I am sorry I wasn't clear the first time I posted. What I wanted to know is what size wheel is correct for that year. My 66 came with non-stock wheels and I am thinking of going back to stock.
thanks,
Lori

15x4.5" with a 5x205mm lug pattern (AKA wide 5)

CIP1 has some re-pops that are made in China, not sure who else has them. You might look on the samba and see what you can find, they're fairly common and you can probably find a good used set for less than buying re-pops new.

Thanks very much. I was looking at some that on craigslist that are 5.5 x 15 and that didnt match my spare so I figured they were not correct for the car. They are Mangels though and I was interested in purchasing some.

Mangels don't match the '66 VW wheel. They are early Porsche style with hubcap clips. Your car should have the '66-'67 style with 10 ventilation slots and no hubcap clips. (Hubcap is held by three nubs in the rim.)

Stock VW rims are date coded, so you should look for dates between 9/65 and 7/67.

Those are the correct '66 tubeless rims, however the paint pattern is not stock.

Well I know that you know, but I craft my responses for the general readership, who may not know. :D

An original tire and wheel

Post by casamagana »

lstyles, the spare in my car is the original tire and wheel. Also, both front wheels are original. These three (3) wheels are all 4" wide. If you need wheel stamping numbers, just say so and I'll post soon. I'll need to pull the spare and take some pictures of the back side stampings. Here's a picture of the spare.
