VW1300S on deck lid

Post by B.Rich »

My 66 indicates "VW1300S" on the deck lid. I vaguely remember hearing somewhere that this makes it a Euro model. It has a sunroof, which I always figured was the reason for the S, but cars meant for the U.S. market did not have "VW" on the back. Can anyone help me I.D?

All North American 1966 Volkswagens had a 1300 script on the decklid, and that's it.

1300S is a euro badge, but it's late model stuff. It's original owner would have been a 1600cc 4 lug swing axle car most likely, they were made through the 70's in Europe. essentially a normal deluxe beetle in vintage. Someone stuck it on your deck lid , maybe they thought they'd get some more money out of it if they could sell it as a euro model.

As was mentioned, US bound '66's would have only the 1300 script on them deck lid. "Volkswagen" made it's appearance in 1967.
