Straightening out Orig Chrome '66 bumpers

Post by TheBilgeRat »

Hi!

I am curious if anyone has had any luck straigthening out the original chrome bumpers on a '66 or any beetle for that matter. I have a new (to me) '66 on the hook, but the bumpers are decently rough (dents, tweaks, etc.) Is it a simple matter of heating them up a bit and a few good blows with a hammer, or is it an exercise in futility?

Thanks!

I have the original bumpers on my car and after 43 years they have a few scratches. If you are thinking of having them re-chromed then I would suggest letting the chromers straighten them out. I just had some classic motorcycle fenders rechromed and one had a long crease in it, and the shop made it look brand new. I think if you go to work on the bumper with a hammer you will regret it.
