66 Beetle stalling between 1st and 2nd. Please help.

Post by joseph_os »

I'm thinking of buying a 1966 beetle from a friend of a friend. It runs great, little rust and has no electrical problems besides a burned out bulb, but WHEN I SHIFT FROM FIRST TO SECOND IT NEARLY STALLS OUT -even if the gas is to the floor. It starts in first and shifts between the other gears just fine. What's this all about?

Hello

I used to have a 1964 beetle, it used to do a similar thing.

I had to keep the revs really high when changing to second gear to avoid stalling it. Once it warmed up the problem went away. I don't know if it has anything to do with 6 volt electrics? My 1966 bug doesn't have the same problem.

I don't think it has anything to do with the 6 volt system - this sounds like a carburator problem to me.

John is 100% correct your carb needs to be rebuilt.....it is the pump side of the carb that is bad... no big deal . Also when was the last time the valves where adjusted??? and if so what gap was used
