I'm not quite sure of what you mean by "totally off." Shoot me an email with your chassis number, and I'll try to decipher it.
Hi, the VIN on the chasis of my supposedly '66 reads 5193918 and the VIN under the spare tire reads 116 XXXX (don't have it with me right now). Does this mean that the bug has been modified and a '66 shell has been put onto a '64 (or whatever year 51XXXXX is...?) chasis?
The registration has the 116 XXX VIN and it's registered as a '66 indeed. But the chasis VIN doesnt match. :(
Can anyone comment on this please? Any information will help me get to know my new bug.
Thanks in advance.

You have a '66 body on a '63 chassis.

It happens.

Hey Blue Baron,
Thanks for the information. At least I know what year the chasis is now.
