transmission noise

I am new to VW's. I just installed a new rebuilt transmission in my bug and it seems to me to be real noisy. I do not know what is a normal level of gear noise and what is not for a VW. I used to have a 49 chev pickup and it sounds something like that. 1st gear is quiet but 2nd, 3rd, and 4th are noisy enough that I can barely hear the motor over the gear noise. Reverse is very noisy. I am in the process of contacting the people who I got the transmission from but wanted to hear what the experts had to say about this first.

I can not help it , but must ask..Is the tranny filled with gear oil?

Put gear oil in before even put it under the car.

I now believe that the problem is the adjustment/alignment of the ring gear and the pinion. To make a long story short I am pulling the tranny again and sending it back.
