Early 66

Post by ento »

So I am trying to find out some info. I am looking at a 66 VIN # 116039XXX Samba states august starts with 116102 so that makes me a little curious and is my first question.
Did they start here or is this a very early aug 65 car?

Second question. They have 1200 cc engine codes listed for 66 as well. Why or what would be the reason?
Standard vs Deluxe?
Euro vs American?
The Tx title for the car doesn't match the vin on the pan but the vin on the title could easily be an engine code if they dropped the D. It is not uncommon and my 61 had that issue and the birth certificate verified it. But that was an easy tell since no letters were used on the engines in 61 and well there wasn't two possible codes either lol.
The texas title VIN is 0050xxx which coul be D0050 and would make it a Dec 65 1200 cc engine. Seems like huge difference in time between the pan and engine though

I am sure why the VIN did not start at 116000001 on August 1 1965 for the 1966 model year. It shows that it did for 67 and later on the Samba site.

They did offer a 1200A which was a bare bones model. I believe it was called the standard model before 65? Does your bug have chrome trim on it? A full headliner? Engine could have been swapped out. Casey

The numbers listed on the chart are for the last vehicle produced in the month. So the last vehicle produced in Aug `65 should be 116102780. 116039XXX was likely produced the first week of August 1965. The last 1200 in August would be D0016999.
The 1200 cc engine would come in a Standard Beetle. The Deluxe had the 1300. I would think that there are very few standard `66 Beetles in this country. Probably not likely that 0050xxx came from an engine number. Did you check that the number stamped on the frame tunnel matches the VIN tag in the spare tire area?
