6 volt light bulb cross reference

Post by Digger89L »

I came across a good (I think) local source for some NOS six volt light bulbs, but of course they don't have the VW part number cross reference so I can match their "trade" numbers to the VW numbers in my owners manual.
Some sources say the parking light lamp (at 4w) is interchangeable with the license plate light (at 10w) ...but that doesn't seem to make sense ...??

I know a few of the cross references from my research:

N177051 headlight is a #6006 sealed beam
N177171 parking lamp is a #81
N177371 stop light / tail light is a #1154
N177311 turn signal (front and rear) is a #1129

What I'm missing are the "trade" numbers for the other miscellaneous bulbs:

N177191 license plate light, 10w
N177221 speedo, fuel gauge and warning lights, 1.2w
N177231 interior light, 10w

Can anyone fill in the blanks for me??

Thanks!!

I found this at -http://www.classiccult.com/blog/vintage ... vPB0h.dpuf

Headlights : 6V 35/35W / Osram 7324, Philips 6728
Parking Lights : 6V 4W / Osram 6892, Philips 6929
Stop / Tail Lights : 6V 18/5W / Osram 7230, Philips 6517
Stop / Tail Lights : 6V 20/5W / Osram 7440, Philips 6500
License Plate Light : 6V 5W / Osram 5006, Philips 6821
Instrument Dash Lights : 6V 1,2W / Osram 3799, Philips 6829
Interior Dome Light : 6V 10W / Osram 6450, Philips 6866
Semaphore Light : 6V 3W / Osram 6427, Philips 6227
Direction Indicator Turn Signal Light : 6V 18W / Osram 7526, Philips 6401
Fog Light : 6V 35W / Osram 7315, Philips 6227

They have some classic bulb charts from orginal VW manuels in German. I checked and the Phillips numbers are still used and are the correct bulbs.

Thank you!! That will be very helpful. I'll report back on my 'picking' trip.

Not much luck! The guys had only a pair of NOS 6v sealed beams ..at $12 ea. I picked those up, which was a good deal. Turns out they service domestic brands (Ford) almost exclusively, and most of their NOS stuff was 12 volt.

I did a Google search on the Phillips numbers I posted earlier:

License Plate Light : 6V 5W / Osram 5006, Philips 6821
Instrument Dash Lights : 6V 1,2W / Osram 3799, Philips 6829
Interior Dome Light : 6V 10W / Osram 6450, Philips 6866

And the following site had them all in stock:

https://www.interlight.biz/products.int ... +/+VINTAGE

Just search google like "Phillips 6821" or on their site in their search and you will find all three you need in stock.

Converted to 6 volt LED's?

Post by dcarlson12 »

I would like to convert my brake lights, turn signal lights and possibly tail lights to LED's which hopefully will be brighter than my existing/factory incandescent bulbs.

I worry a lot that the existing bulbs are not bright enough.

Has anyone here done this and if so can advise where to obtain the LED bulbs and also what was required to mimic the incandescents so that the flasher unit will still flash at or near to original frequency?

Thks
