Axle boot clamp tool

Post by Roadbug »

I just bought a new set of German made split axle boots for our 66. They came with "crimp clamps", and they recommend a $120.00 Klann tool. I think they're nuts! I don't want to buy a tool to use to crimp them, so I plan on re-using the old screw type hose clamps from the previous boots.
Am I missing something, or is there a reasonably prices tool to use in my $20 boots?
An old car nut who got his driver's license in a new 1961 VW and has owned 10 VW's (1957-1972) since then. Favorite was the 67's (2), but the 66 is the longest owned and current VW.

I use clamps like these that do not require a tool. http://www.ebay.com/itm/VW-SWING-AXLE-B ... oA&vxp=mtr

I wonder if you could find some at Lowes or Home Depot. I know they make 4 inch ones at Lowes for 4 inch ductwork. Not sure if they would be too wide for the boot or not. Casey
