Body restore advice

Post by KKV270 »

Hi.
I'm considering doing some bodywork on my van that doesn't show for rust apart from some evident areas.
My question, is it adviceable to tackle bodywork by going for bare metal (especially outside) or just the evidently needed places? My thinking is, if the panel is ok for all those years, why undo the protective layers that were well done? (Why re-invent the wheel)??

Thanks for the advice in advance.

If the metal adjacent metal is rusty, you will have to grind back to bare metal to weld in new metal. Also, as paint and supplies are expensive, at least here in the US, I would think you want to start with bare metal. That is unless you can guarantee the new paint will stick to old paint or primer.
