VIN Confusion

Post by thade »

I am looking at purchasing a 1966 convertible. I have looked at the VIN numbers and here is what I find.
The title: 1563487xx (November 1965 build?)
The floor stamp under the rear seat on the chassis: same as above. All good.
The plate behind the wheel in the boot shows the following: 156 (top row), 1180 (second row) 4xx (bottom row). Is this a different VIN, or is this just information on the body type. There is a lot of paint on the plate so perhaps I am missing the actual VIN number under the paint.

Any assistance is appreciated.

VIN Follow Up

Thanks for you help. I have figured out that the VIN on the front plate is etched rather than in raised form, and is to the right of the "156" raised designation. I'll clean it and check.
Thanks again.

The first 3 digits of a 1966 beetle convertible should be 151 or 153. See info here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/inf ... stype1.php
