Howdy!

Post by Seibert66 »

Glad I was allowed to join this community! Last week I purchased a '66 SeaSand bug in Ocean Beach, California. I'll try to make it as stock as possible. I'll start searching for period correct hubcaps. Does anybody know when the hubcaps changed to the "66 look" ? I would think August 1965, but I'm not 100% sure...

According to the official VW "Progressive Refinements" documents, the wheels and hubcaps were changed in Aug. 1965 for the 1966 model year: flat-style hubcaps, and new slotted style wheels. Not sure why people with 66 model year cars 'went back' to the pre-66 style of wheels and the older 'dog dish' style hub caps. When I got my 66 project car (built in Jan 66) ..the previous owner had also installed the older style wheels and hub caps.

Thanks for clarifying that, I have the original manual dated August 1965...so I guess this was one of the early 1966 bugs...

To tell how early your `66 is, compare your VIN to the numbers on this chart:

Keep in mind that each chassis number is the last vehicle produced in that month.

That looks to be built before Aug. 12, 1965.

Is there a chance that a small number of early 1966 model bugs would have had the old style hubcaps?

Don't think so. Mine is 116000423 and it has flat hubcaps.

Curious about the location of the Emergency Flasher switch. It is 'usually' higher up on the dash ...just above where yours is located. I note that your car has the 'optional' (?) locking steering wheel, so perhaps on those cars so equipped, they put the flasher switch where the ignition switch would 'usually' go ..saved drilling another hole! Those efficient Krauts !!!

Yeah, I'm not sure either about the positioning of the hazard flasher on my dash. Maybe this bug was originally purchased and kept in Europe in the early summer of '65. The ignition on the steering column was typical for the European market , and if the owner relocated to the US at a later date...the flasher had to be added to comply with the '66 US regulations...
