air clearner queries

Hi. I recently got the original air clearner to my bug....talk about size....it looks like a cooking pot.

This makes me ask- how significant is the air cleaner? Does size matter? (I was earlier using my bugs cleaner on the bus' engine.

(also to mention, I noticed a shutter designs to direct air through either the smaller or wider opening. Please enlight me on this system. Thanks.
