a golf tee in my carb?

Post by cricketseed »

Hi folks. New owner of a '66. It seems there's a golf tee in my carburetor (which is a Solex 34 Pict-3, as I understand it. Make and model of tee unknown.) Photo attached.

I assume the tee has been used to block off something, but can anyone tell me:

1. Specifically, why is the tee there?
2. Should I replace it with something more appropriate?

Thanks,
Jason

Appears to be blocking the vacuum used for distributor or other vacuum need like air cleaner. There are rubber caps that can also be used. Some carbs had up to 3 vacuum ports. Maybe a tee color matched to the car?

Thanks. There's a joke in there somewhere about a VW Golf, but I'm not smart enough to make it.

"I'd be tee'd off if I found one of those in my carb."

"Maybe we should tee-up a mechanic to check this out."

"Tee for two? ....oh sorry, its a Type 1."

"Perhaps this could be a standard accessory for the VW Golf ..but it should be in the glove box, not the carb."

"Okay, I see the Tee ...but this engine doesn't appear to have any balls.."

..etc. etc.
"If you can't fix it with zip ties and duct tape, or hold it together with velcro or magnets, it REALLY is broken."

You can buy a little pack of the block-offs at any auto parts store. Normally a pack has a few different sizes and colors. I call them squirrel or gerbil condoms, depending on the size.
