The first is from the day, i bought it in 2010, and the second picture is now in 2014 out of garage.

For some reason the lower picture make the rear bumper look like it's too low and far away from the body.

Yeah, it looks like that from certain angles. I've noticed that in pics of my own car, and others. Always thought it was odd that VW didn't "square off" the bottom of the engine cover which would have allowed them to move the rear bumper about 3 inches closer to the body. Its amazing the number of VWs you see where the engine cover just barely clears the bumper, or actually hits it ...obviously due to a nudge on the bumper.

The engine cover on my '66 Sedan clears the bumper less than 1/4".
