Engine Number

Post by larryho »

My friend owns a 1966 Beetle. I thought the letter preceeding the Engine number should be a F. The letter on this engine is a E. Can someone explain why this is so. Thanks. :o

The letter designation for the 1966 model year (1300) was an F. I have seen some F's that look a lot like E's. There was no E designation as far as I know:

1961,1962,1963,1964 - no letter designation
YEAR CHASSIS NUMBER ENGINE Letter ENGINE HP
1965 115 000 001 -145 000 001 - D 1200 40
1966 116 000 001 -146 000 001 - F 1300 50
1967 117 000 001 -147 000 001 - H 1500 53
1968 118 000 001 -148 000 001 - H 1500 53
1969 119 000 001 -149 000 001 - H 1500 53
1970 1102 000 001 -1402 000 001 - B 1600 57

Thanks John. I have checked the chassis number and is definitely correct for a 1966 model, but the E preceeding the engine. Must have a closer look again. Can someone swap the engine after all this is a more than 40 year old car. Can we check from somewhere the originial engine number for this chassis.

If you want to know what the engine number was for the vehicle, send in for a beetle birth certificate - this is the best way to know if everything is original. Here is the link for the information:

cool - 2weeks ago I was able to get a load of spareparts and there were 3 motorblocks among them. One of them is carrying a number of F0551044. So January/February '66; as my beetle was either made or sold on 04/04/1966, getting it made me very happy :)

but to be honest I'm a bit confused about the other blocks I possess - using some quite nice sources on the internet I still can not identify those... Perhaps you have found some places that have motor-tables? The ones I found and went through are:

Thanks in advance,

Hi Teet! Right - those are about as specific as you will be able to get - I don't think you will ever be able to find one that lists the engine number and the specific date it was produced. I have a few books but the information is basically the same.

no, the exact date is not the case - it's just that my other motors do not fit the motor-numbering standard:
- D493894: one number-digit missing. True, from '65 1200s had motor numbers "D0XXXXXX"
- D1202212: too big figure. 1200 was in production until ca '74 - right? One source I found, told that in 1972 1200 numbers started from D1000001
- 126-009873: does not match VW T1-T2-T3 numbering at all => for some other equipment? As we know, VW aircooled engines were also used on military and firefighting equipment...

so that's the case :)

Based on John Muir's How to keep your Volkswagen alive on Chapter XVI there are indeed some engines with the "E" number. This indicate that the engine has the M240 Smog Control.
Glad that I read this book and can now assure quite a few guys that their 1300 in our part of the world has the correct engine with the E on their engines. :D
