bug stutters and lacks power

Post by MoBugMan »

had this problem for a couple of months-in the cold, she would start hard and then when i would put her into second gear, she would lurch and sputter almost like she was going to fall apart until I almost shifted to third.
After the winter. i took apart the carb and found I had lost the throttle nozzle....guess where? I assumed it had fallen down the intake manifold and got chewed up. I also assumed that having the fuel not mixing right was causing the lurching. ( My local bug guy says that the brass nozzle should not have hurt my cylinders. {???})
After a complete carb rebuild, adjusting my valves, timing, new plugs, adjusting my points, new plug wires, drilling out my heat riser tubes {!!!!}and an oil change she sounds great when i start her up, but when I put her under a load, she still sputters and does not have a lot of power. She won't stall, but she lurches and stutters almost like she's missing.
Help! not sure what to check next.

Have you checked if the vacuum advance is working? I'm not sure - just a guess

Do not have a vacuum advance distributor.
I also have a 30 pict 1 carb.

bug stutters and lacks power

Hi.

Sorry about your state. Have you tried adjusting the distributor (probably advancing or returding)? I had mine done on point using the test lamp but that wouldn't give me sufficient power as I realized advancing it slightly did it. Well, all the best. I'm eager to learn from your experience as well.

I went back to square one: checked the carb, adjusted valves, adjusted points, and adjusted distributor. I advanced it slightly and it seemed to do the trick. The car is running smooth, once it warms up. Looks like it was timing.
I am going to start a new thread about a couple of issues I am still having.

Did you ever get this worked out??? If not, you might have a clogged heat riser tube. This will cause the gasoline going to the cylinders to make the intake ice up.
