HELP Needed: VIN / ENGINE Number experts.

Post by adi-66 »

Hi First post on here for me :-)

Over here in the Uk I have a 1966 Deluxe Model Car, declared as manufactured on 31.12.1966 confirmed by the DVLA (UK- Driver & Vehicle Licencing Authority), so is DEFIANTLY a 1966 car, with ALL of the unique 1966 identifiers: Centre dash vent, Interior Trim (+dash & door card chrome), Square push exterior door handles, Rear body bumper mounts, 1 year only brake reservoir, front beam, Interior mirror etc etc

Problem is according to "the Samba" my car is a December 1965 - January 1966 built car (not December 1966, as the DVLA have on record), and the (original as far as I'm aware) engine was built between April & May 16th 1967 and is a 1200....

The the question is, how can my car be a 1965 built 1966, with a 1967 original engine, that's a 1200 not a 1300 ?

How can I tell if its a 1300 engine as the '66 was supposed to come with for this year only ?

Here's the numbers:
Vin: 116-540-xxx
Engine: F11320xx

If you can help, thanks :-)

The Volkswagen model year begins in August of the previous year. The 1966 model year is from August 1965 through July of 1966. Starting with the 1965 model year, the third digit of the vin # indicates the model year so yours is definitely a 1966 model. My info shows that vin # 116 503 114 was built on January 15, 1966 and that vin # 116 543 112 was built on the last day of January 1966 so your 116-540-xxx should be between those two dates. Search "Birth Certificate" on The Samba to find out how to obtain info about your car.

Not all 1966 Beetles were 1300. Non Deluxe Beetles came with a 1200 engine. If the number stamped on your engine begins with an F than you have a 1300 engine. The number is stamped on the pedestal that the generator sits on.

The 1500 engine came out for the 1967 model but the 1200 and 1300 engines were also available for the 1967 model. The letter D denotes a 1200 engine and the letter H is used for the 1500 engine. I think that what you have is 1300 engine for the 1967 model.

Thanks, but i'm not too sure that a "Birth certificate" satisfy s the DVLA's requirements for a its age, I've heard whispers of them not accepting the document over here in the UK.

I will find out this Tuesday when I've got a little trip to my local office planned.
