Engine code

Post by Badman24 »

Hello all, I just finally found a 66 bug. My question is my engine code is UB068502. I have no idea which engine I have. Its a converted 12 volts system. Its also a single port.

You need to post a photo of the actual engine code stamped on the alternator mount base. Then there will be no doubt about the number ... There are no numbers in the engine data base starting with a UB letter code.

Most likely a mystery engine case.

One thing I would advise is to check the alignment of the pulleys. It looks as if the 6 volt generator pulley is on the 12-volt alternator, which is longer than the generator and can result in misalignment and potential belt failure. The solution is to fit the later-style pulley.

Nice catch, I will run out and check the pulleys out. I wanted to keep the stock look, but that alternator is obviously not making it look stock. And I have no idea of the engine size without doing the cc test.

Any U code I found was referenced to a 1600cc motor used on Type 3 FI engines and Brazilian engines. The B is still a mystery. One other person I found had a UB coded case and it was believed to be a Brazilian replacement case. But I could find nothing that specifically referenced the use of a UB code by VW. Good luck on your search and if you find anything let us know. Until then, drive it like you stole it.

The alternator wouldn't have fit at all with the old stand.

I know Barron. Though to some the stand is obvious (me included), others don't know the difference. It seems many here have issues that require in depth or extensive information and pictures. That is what I try to do here so others can learn about their 49 year old simple car. As always, I try to provide helpful infromation from my experiences. Maybe I should just stop as it seems there are plenty of opinions already here.

You're offering information to others who are contemplating an alternator conversion. Got it.
