All `66's would have the F series motors unless it was not a Deluxe in which case it would have come with a 1200 motor. The 1500 motor began at the start of the `67 model year.
Yes, I would say that the 12V system is a very original looking conversion.

The first thing I would do is confirm that the engine in the car was originally a 1300. A 1300 engine would have a serial number that begins with the letter F. Even if it starts with the letter F, it may not be the original 1300 that came with the car. VW had an engine exchange system. Instead of ha...

Dyeing the floor mats is an option that some people have done. I have no experience in this.

Is there a chance that a small number of early 1966 model bugs would have had the old style hubcaps?
Don't think so. Mine is 116000423 and it has flat hubcaps.

Thanks, that was helpful! I have VIN # 116056650
That looks to be built before Aug. 12, 1965.

...so I guess this was one of the early 1966 bugs...
To tell how early your `66 is, compare your VIN to the numbers on this chart:

Keep in mind that each chassis number is the last vehicle produced in that month.

Yes, you will need to remove the panel to get the entire ashtray out.
To remove just the tray itself, open the tray part way and push down before pulling out.

On May 4, 1966 at chassis #116852850 (eng # F0 767046), the carburetor preheating was changed from taken from the underside of the cylinder head to taken from the left heat exchanger. I think `67's might have switched back to using heat from the underside of the cylinder head but pulled it from the ...

I cant get the distributor to turn. I have the bolt loosened.
Remove the bolt and pry the clamp apart a bit. Try penetrating oil on it first.

If you turn your engine clockwise by hand with a wrench or socket, it will make sense. Stop turning before the zero mark reaches the top and you are before top dead center. Turn past the zero mark and you are after top dead center. So the marks to the right of zero are BTDC and the marks to the left...
