As a new beetle owner I understand your enthusiasm. Having bought a couple of beetles over the years, I'd like to pass on a couple of things that I've learned. 1. Let someone else restore the car. You'll never get back dollar for dollar what you put into it. Unless you bought it cheap and just do mi...

I'll second the WW belts. It was a fairly easy upgrade and they look great.

I wouldn't think that paper could stand up to the heat. I'd try a new gasket and a thin film of high temp RTV

I haven't fussed with the seal. But to remove the shaft, remove the six bolts and the inner axle will come free. Be careful not to round out the bolts. I like to clean them to ensure the my bit will seat correctly. Don't discard the three anti slip brackets under the bolts. You can reuse them. Here ...

If my memory serves me correctly, that is a tapered tread in the case. Never tighten beyond snug. Having said that, maybe you got lucky and stripped the threads on the oil pressure sensor and not the case. If you did strip the threads in the case, maybe there is enough thread left to use some teflon...

I run the Optima red top battery and like it. The extra cranking amps help with a tired 6 volt electrical system. I lay it on its side where the original battery went. The best deals I've found were buying directly from Optima on their web site (no tax and free shipping). Google coupons for them as ...

Penetrating oil in the hinges couldn't hurt. I'm guessing something physical is slowing the doors movement. Look at the gap between the door and the body just before the door is closed and just after. If it isn't even the entire way around, then something is bent. The other common issue is the door ...

I'd start with easy stuff first. 1. Adjust your valves (cold engine) 2. Set the gap on your points 3. Set your timing 4. Make sure each cylinder is firing (pull one plug at a time with engine running) Drive the car after each step. If it's still running poorly, then adjust the mixture on the carbure...

zoom, I like the candy thermometer idea. I bought one of these and really like it. No permanent modifications and peace of mind. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1428270 The wire on the top of the sender moves in an arc until it reaches an unsafe temp and grounds the oil pressure...
