Very cool. Would love to see come pictures of your 66 against a backdrop of your local scenery. That's my red Bug in the foreground, but not me carrying the little guy. My girls are all grown up!

You'll have a blast getting back to wrenching on some old metal. I hadn't worked on a car since they started putting all that pollution control and computer controlled diagnostics on cars. Just waaaay too complicated. Nice to get back to a good ole analog 6V driven system. All you need is a decent s...

FIGHT the urge to use brute force on a VW. Penetrant, penetrant, penetrant and then HEAT. Also can you find an experienced second set of eyes and hands in the neighborhood to lend a hand? Believe me it does wonders!!! Try not to do anything rash. I've been there.

I know some people like the wheel skirts, but I think it looks very nice slightly less "dressed" up. Did the bug have the original 1300cc motor in it when you made the swap?

good luck, I counted myself lucky to find some NOS cylinders and pistons this past summer. My friend found them for me on Craig's List while traveling in FLA.

Miss Hilda is a pretty famous little Bug. Her owner took her for a cross country tour last year. She covered 4,500 miles in 27 days, quite an accomplishment. She did a great job documenting her tour on this web site.

A little homage

I thought it was appropriate to use John Muir's book to describe a stupid thing I did when I first was trying to get my car started. I used a pencil to try and find top dead center...and Murray bit it right off! DUUUH!!! http://www.1966vwbeetle.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?p=5375&sid=8ba21bdb74431725...

Oh I can't believe there wasn't more cursing and swearing! I would have gone crazy if my car had fallen into that "house hole". Congratulations on your self control and persistence to get GIGI back on the road and running SAFELY. The first thing I worked on when I got Murray was to make su...

Like the shots of you wrenching on your Bug. The weather is starting to turn here in Ohio. I changed the oil and greased the front end before the snow begins to fly. I'll drive Murray here and there throughout the winter as long as the roads are dry and salt free.

Sounds like vapor lock, but this phenomenon is usually experienced when temperatures are warm 75 degrees and above. Next time this happens try pouring water over the fuel pump. This may relieve the vapor lock, if that indeed is the issue.

I replaced my entire wiring harness this past Memorial Day weekend. WELL WORTH it. Lot's of electrical gremlins now GONE! I highly recommend it, especially while the car is apart.

There are some very good threads on what oil to use in air cooled VWs on this forum and thesamba. I just got my car running last summer. I went with a HD oil because of the additional zinc and resulting wear protection. I tried a Vavolline PC synthetic motor oil and I immediately experienced a signi...
