on placing the new one, it fits in tight ang struggles to rotate. the bushing I placed in the bellhousing is the reason. Are you certain you bought the correct replacement? 12 volt starters use a different flywheel. A 12 volt starter on a 6 volt battery would turn much slower. The bushing normally ...

Welcome to the VW community! Post pictures of your project (it's fun to watch the progress of a restoration).
You're not far from a club in Cleveland. You should look them up.

Sounds like you got a good deal. I'd look for another donor car and fix the two you currently have. These cars are getting harder to find, especially ones that aren't rotted out. If the metal work is reasonable on both, save them both. If you don't want a second project, flip one of them and use the...

I would be concerned. It may be the rings, but they should have seated by now. (Unseated rings would have smoke coming from the exhaust. Before the rings seat themselves into the cylinder wall, oil is able to get between the rings and the cylinder wall and migrate above the piston. From there it is ...

#3 cylinder gets the hottest due to the cooling air flow and the location of the oil cooler. Of the exhaust and the intake valves, the exhaust valve gets the hottest. If your engine is overheating to the point of damaging the cylinder heads, you'll see your valve gap change first at the #3 exhaust v...

What is happening that you think the engine is too hot? It's hard to really help without knowing how hot you're getting. It could be as simple as some oil burning off the cooling tins or it could be the engine is destroying itself internally. This picture shows the thermostat in its bracket. The top...

I would break all the lug nuts loose while it's on the ground. I'd buy two sets of jack stands and a hydraulic jack from Habor Freight. Jack the front up first (parking brake on and in gear). Support the front with jack stands under the front beam using the lowest settings of the stands. Jack up the...
