A 1.7 - 2.0 is different than a regular bug motor in all respects internal and external. I do not know is Subaru heads will fit that case. If you plan on using in a 1966 bug, modifications may be required from the transaxle to the body surrounding the engine. This is not a drop in engine for a bug w...

For a single port head, there is no difference from 1500 to 1600. The difference is the cylinder size. You are inferring that someone was CC'ing a head to measure the combustion chamber size. This is done by laying a piece of plexiglass with a hole drilled in the center and set into the head where t...

Check the idle and set between 800 and 900 rpms. Stock is around 700-800, but setting it higher will keep the cooling fan speed/oil pressure up a little more. You'll need to get some things to measure/verifying stuff. VDO, and Auto Gauge have nice little tiny 0-100 psi 1 1/2 diameter pressure gauges...

Try a 50/50 mix of acetone and Dexron/Mercon Automatic Transmission Fluid. Mix one part acetone and one part ATF in a re-fillable spray bottle and go to town. The idea is to thin the ATF with the acetone so it will penetrate and seep into and between surfaces. The acetone will evaporate, leaving the...

The Empi pump is similar. I mounted under the tank on the pan behind the passenger wheel. That's also where the filter is. Here is a post on how someone rigged a fuel pump shut off.

If the metal adjacent metal is rusty, you will have to grind back to bare metal to weld in new metal. Also, as paint and supplies are expensive, at least here in the US, I would think you want to start with bare metal. That is unless you can guarantee the new paint will stick to old paint or primer.
