Hi Frank, I think I am the guy you bought the pistons/cylinders from. Were there problems with the rings? I used a set just as yours on a 1300 I built last year and had no issues with the rings that were installed on the VISCA set. I searched Deves Scrapper and this popped up. https://www.thesamba.c...

Front seal leak.

I wonder if anyone has any advice on why my front seal started to leak. I found a 66 engine on the Samba that had sat outside for a number of years and was locked up. I took it apart and realized case was still in good shape with standard bearings and thrust. Polished crank, put in new cam and lifte...

Yes, where the flywheel mates with crank. Until April 66 there was no o-ring on flywheel. There is a step machined on end of crank. It is shallower on a non o ring flywheel, longer on a 12 volt crank, so it will sit deeper in flywheel for o ring to seal. The correct flywheel must mate with correct c...

I use clamps like these that do not require a tool. http://www.ebay.com/itm/VW-SWING-AXLE-BOOT-CLAMP-KIT-TYPE-1-2-3-W-O-I-R-S-/271411460969?hash=item3f31623b69:m:m8mrt7mfseoSgRcsKThE8oA&vxp=mtr I wonder if you could find some at Lowes or Home Depot. I know they make 4 inch ones at Lowes for 4 in...

Yes, you can swap the 12 volt generator stand for a 6 volt no problem. You will have to determine if your current flywheel has an o-ring in it or not. Early 66 engines did not have an o-ring. If your current 6 volt flywheel has an o-ring, it will fit the 12 volt crankshaft. You will need a pack of 1...

A mirror was always on the driver's side, as far as I know. The passenger side mirrors were dealer accessories. Hopefully there is a pin in the hinge that will accept a mirror. Casey

Good morning. Pull spark plug wire off of plug. Grab plug wire with one hand, spark plug connector with other and pull. Should separate, pull off seal and replace, Sometimes you may need to trim 1/4 inch off of end of wire before reattaching. Casey

I will lengthen the wire and connect to terminal 61 on regulator. The light comes on when the key is on the "on" position. Explains why it didn't illuminate last week when the battery was going dead. Good thing I have not had a belt break in the last fifteen years! Thanks again for your he...

Hi, thanks for following up. A loose wire in a terminal. New terminal-have charge. I do have a question though - bug is converted to 12 volt and has regulator fastened to the fan shroud. The heavy red wire from harness is connected to D+ and has another heavy wire connecting generator D+ to regulato...

Thank you for the useful information. I am not the best with electrical and I appreciate your input. I suspect the regulator because the generator isn't that old. I did polarize the generator after installation. I hope to get to it this weekend. Casey

Dead Battery, Generator not charging.

Hello all, My 66 is converted to 12 volt. I put a new Bosch, not rebuilt generator in this summer. The battery went dead a week ago and I thought it was because I had left lights on at the store. I took it out and gave it a trickle charge and all was good, for three days. Then last night it wouldn't...
