I would think in your case, the drivers door should be closed before attempting to doing anything. You should be doing any welding of braces without first removing the interior along with all Upholstery or anything else that is flammable. With a few measurements I would think the next step would be ...

Never say never.
I saw that one. It was buried fairly deep and the guy must have really wanted it to go to so much trouble retrieving it.

I wish I could find a "How To" on removing the steering column housing. I just want to make sure I don't screw something up. I only want to clean up the housing and re-paint it the correct color.

Color for a '66 Beetle steering wheel (045 Grey-Black)

Does the steering wheel in the picture appear to be the correct color (L43 Grey-Black)? Someone told me mine was supposed to be Black. I just want to make sure I don't end up with another wrong part. This one appears to be a charcoal color. Is that what would be called Gray-Black? http://i68.photobu...

I've got a fairly decent Ivory colored steering wheel on my '66 now. If it weren't for a couple very small crack it would be next to perfect. I figured if it needed to be painted Black anyhow to be the correct color I may as well fill the cracks before painting. Any particular brand or type of plast...

Is there such a thing as an uncracked OEM steering wheel?

Is there a compound that will fill the cracks in an OEM steering wheel? I would like to find a nice OEM Black steering wheel for my '66 Beetle but that may be asking too much.

Does a paint job hold up on a steering wheel?

THe engine compartment is suppose to be air tight so the outside air can be sucked in through the vents below the rear window. These seals keep hot air from the exhaust flange (bolted to the head) from entering the engine compartment. If hot air comes into the compartment, it is mixed with the cool...

'66 would have a semi-gloss black column.
Regardless of what color the steering wheel is?

I would at least like get the door lock and the ignition keyed the same.

I'm not an expert on this, but I believe 30 or 31 inches (I forget which) is considered the best length for FM reception. Longer is better for AM reception but that is not the case with FM. It has something to do with the length of the signal wave that FM uses. When you get your new antenna install...

It has always amazed me that those of different nationalities, cultures and geography can have so much in common when it comes to sharing our interests of Classic Volkswagens. But when it comes to politics and or religion we can become bitter enemies.
