The thermostat is in place and appears to be working. This cold snap doesn't seem to want to end anytime soon, so I expect I won't even be trying to start the car for a bit. As I said, I am getting airflow from both sides through the vents below the back seat and at the window - left side warm and r...

Standard 1600 set-up
I believe this to be a standard 1600 (from '71) set-up with the exhaust tubes coming off the front cylinders and going through the exchangers on both sides. I know at one point there was a gas heater above the trans - still there but the hoses, connections and guts are gone.

Heat Exchangers - one hot, one not
Checking the heat in my Beetle (windchill of -29C tonight - that's -20F below the 49th!) and, after idling for about 10 minutes, only the left side of the muffler was hot. Therefore, only the left heat exchanger was putting hot air in the car. There was airflow on the right all the way to the windsh...

My "mechanical" talents - NOT!
To be fair to history..... The 39 Ford I won in a draw. Had sat for years after a bit of work and wouldn't even start when I picked it up. Body was GREAT! Electrics were iffy. Engine was a mystery (flathead V8). Got it running, but never smooth. Year and a half later I had sold the car and was getti...

Bluebox/black box
This is the 9 terminal relay that is causing all the problems with the turn signals. When I put the wires according to the diagram I found on another posting on the forum, the turn signals work, but, the turn signal light on the speedometer flashes constantly - even when the turn signal is off. But ...

Wiring
Got used to wiring problems with a 72 Triumph Spitfire. Everything in the car gounded (not very well) to one location. The Beetle was converted to 12v. I'm thinking maybe following the original wiring diagrams may not always work? That could explain the turn signal problem and the fact that one head...

Mystery Button with 3 wires
I chased the wires this afternoon (2 larger dark green and 1 smaller green with white stripe), but, they just went into the wiring harness and don't know where they go from there. I checked the power and it does have power when the key is turned on (none without the key on). Also could not get the t...

I'm new to the site (and Beetles) with a 66 I picked up just prior to Christmas. Has a '71 1600 motor. Looking forward to spending time in it when the snow is gone and the temperature climbs above -20 c. I'm one of those inept non-mechanics who's just brave (foolish?) enough to try most things with ...

What is this Button?
I am new to the forum (and Beetles) and have a 66. I already have a question. What is the button to the right of the ashtray in my picture? The owner's manual shows nothing there or hazard lights in later models. Seems to have a relay attached behind the dash, but, nothing happens when I pull the bu...
