Thanks SO MUCH for the great insights into my troubles. I've certainly driven a bug (my ol' '72) without a clutch, so I think I could nurse this bug where it needs to be. It's about an hour away but mostly highway. I'll try the engine mount test a little later today and, after that, take a closer lo...

Well, I drilled inspection holes at the front and the weld is good there, too. I'm at a loss. It's not the cable or the clutch tube welds. What else might cause such a sudden partial failure of the system? Any ideas?

Thanks for the great info. I just drilled a couple of inspection holes and the middle weld appears solid. Would a break in just the front weld cause similar issues? In other words, does the tube flex that much up front, too? I hate to drill more holes... especially in my apartment complex parking lo...

Thanks, darzoom. I think I'm going to drill a few small holes in the tunnel this afternoon to see if I can confirm that's what's going on before I make any serious cuts. I'm surprised that there could be that much bend in the tube!

Are my clutch tube welds broken? Help!

Thanks in advance for any insight... Bug has been shifting great then, all of a sudden, clutch felt much stiffer and started to shudder when going into gear. Also seems like the clutch disengages really high on the pedal. I pulled the cable--it was fine. I pulled on the bowden tube and it pretty muc...

So true. What's weird is that it was working perfectly with the old switch, and nothing changed but the switch. If I move the switch a tiny bit, I can get the signals to work without the horn sounding, but if I click the switch all the way over, the horn blows. This makes me think it's not a wiring ...

New turn signal switch makes the horn blow?

My sweet li'l '66 is making me pull my hair out again. I just installed a new turn signal switch and now, when I use the turn signal, the horn sounds! Any ideas? I've removed the steering wheel and even disconnected the brown wire from the horn ring and it still does it. Obviously something is groun...

Thanks, Kyle. I had the same bolt-hiding-in-the-door issue that you had! But it didn't completely solve my problem. There seems to be a lot of extra play in the lock mechanism itself for some reason. But I was able to (temporarily, I'm sure) move the handle mount about a quarter of an inch forward a...

Inside door handles won't open door

Is there some way to adjust the inside door handles so that they pull more? The outside handles work fine but the inside door handles don't pull the little metal piece in the latch up high enough to let the door open. I'm stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I don't want to have a fire or...

Kyle, Thanks for the answer, man. I guess I wasn't as clear with my question as I thought, though. I'm not talking about how the starter fits into the bug. I'm talking about the starter itself. Before I installed it, I was trying to mount a hard start relay to one of the bolts that holds the starter...

6v starter body bolts stripped?

Hey all, So I'm trying to replace a worn 6v starter on my '66 while also installing a hard start relay. I tried to install it as per Muir (by grounding it to one of the body bolts for the starter) but when I try to reinstall the starter bolt it seems to be stripping out inside the starter. What have...

Hello from Corvallis, OR

Hey all, Bought my first '66 about six months ago (I think it's my 11th VW over the last 25 years). Maybe THIS one will finally be the one I don't have to sell at some point! I've put about $2500 in the engine, another 1k or so in parts, and am expecting her back from the paint shop this Saturday! S...
