WOW this is an old tread. I've been very busy and honestly just forgot about this site. My 66 is finished but took a very different turn during the restoration. Here are a few pics.

A vacuum gauge is a good diagnostic tool. The camshaft in a beetle however has a good deal of valve overlap which means that the exhaust and intake valve are open together as the piston is moving down the bore. This can make it tricky to judge any vacuum related issues at low RPM's. If you familiari...

These are just what I prefer. The tires you run and the handling characteristics you desire will dictate what you will run as well.

The lead was added to gasoline to lubricate the valve seats. If your car is still running the original heads it probably has lead imbedded into the seats and will be fine on unleaded gas. If it is running newer heads then the seats were likely replaced to the hardened seats for unleaded fuel. If you...

If they come out in good shape and fit tightly back in I might consider re using them. Buying new ones is always the best bet for safety reasons.

The ball joints are slotted so that they pivot front to rear. If they were installed at an angle when they were pressed into the arms this would make them tight. If they were too far from being centered they would not move at all. Double check the joint to ensure that the slot faces directly forewar...

I agree with John. PATIENCE is the key. The super beetles are hard to bleed. Some parts of the system are above the master cylinder and air rises to the top. Just work it like John said and be patient.

A tach is an easy install. It should come with instructions. If your car is still 6 volts it may be hard to find one that will work. If it is 12 volts just follow the instructions and you should have no trouble.

The choke is not part of the rebuild kit. If your car is still 6 volt a choke is going to be hard to find. If it is 12 volt the chikes can be bought from a VW parts place. A stock replacement carb is also available. Places like Mid America Motorworks, CB Performance or any other VW specialist parts ...

If the engine is stock then the stock carb is the best. I would get a carb kit and give it a good cleaning and overhaul and roll with it.
