It could be any number of things. Start with the basics. I'd check the valve clearances on a cold engine. Make sure it's actually cold. Dealers used to drive the car around the dealership and into the garage. That little bit of driving would add enough heat to the engine and throw off valve measurem...

For peace of mind, you could buy one of these. For 5 bucks, it's a no brainer.

Congrats!

I have a black 66 with a sunroof. I need to spend some time on the sunroof itself though. It hasn't opened since I bought it.

Any trouble sourcing the sunroof parts?

As previously stated, make sure you have a 12 volt horn since you've converted to 12 volt. Sounds like you are approaching this methodically. My next step would be to test the horn itself. A 12 volt battery and a jumper wire are all you need to test it. If that doesn't work, it's time for a new one....

Thanks for the info . I don't care for the way it looks , but would deck lid standoffs be a viable option ? I don't care for the way the standoffs look. It changes the look of the car too much. Not to mention, you shouldn't need them. The Germans are pretty good engineers and spent a lot of time de...

The later model beetles came with more deck lid vents. I'm guessing that the higher horse power engines (1600) created more heat and needed more ventilation.

hercdriver I will give it a shot next time it won't fire up. Any idea why that combination works? It was a technique recommended by a long time VW driver. I assumed that it was clearing out any excess fuel in the intake/cyclinders, but now question that assumption. Perhaps it helps clear any vapor ...

Mine fires right up when cool. However I have a harder time getting it started after a long drive and more than a few minutes of sitting. This technique seems to help.... Foot off the gas pedal Start to crank the engine (3 to 4 revolutions) Full throttle on the gas pedal (don't pump the pedal) Slowl...

EMPI used to be a highly regarded company. Today it sells mostly Chinese knock off parts. For anyone getting into their first engine rebuild, I would highly recommend buying this book ....... https://www.amazon.com/Rebuild-Volkswagen-air-Cooled-Engine-models/dp/0895862255/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=...

When I bought my bumpers from Wolfsburg West, they insisted that silver was correct for 66 bumper brackets. I bought a can of their paint and it turned out well.

I believe this is it. I would call them to confirm it.

I had the battery tested and it is good. Are you sure that it's not a weak battery? I know that you had it tested, but it may not be producing enough cranking amps. Some batteries when new will not be strong enough, due to resistance in the system. I had slow cranking and difficulty starting before...

Re: Hydraulic tapets - adjustment query

Hi. Been a while...wow! Hope you're all well. Question! Having run on a pancake (flat 4) engine with the valves adjusted to 1.5 turns, my drive has been a drag (about 1000miles)...worst...terribly loosing momentum on hills. I adjusted the valves to 0-lash today and my-oh-my... 'Haven't I got it all...
