empi shifter install

I bought an empi short shifter, When I installed it, I could not shift into reverse. All the gears work just fine. I used the shift plate that came with the shifter. any help would be helpful. thanks.

My bug is 10in high. For some reason I thought that it should be higher.
Some of the bugs that I looked at were taller. here are some pics of both doors and left side.

Thank you for your response. It appears that the hinges are worn out.I'll post some pics as soon as can. The other question, the car has been lowered by a previous owner. I'm not sure if this question has been asked before, so I'll ask.
The doors on my bug are sagging, how do I fix this problem ? Also how do I raise my car to the original height ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
