Thanks KKV270. I decided to use DOT 4 as well. Wheel cylinders and master have been rebuilt so rubber parts should be okay. Time will tell. Finished replacing reservoir and line to master and all is go for now.

Doing own research on which fluid to use. Best I can tell, Dot 3 glycol based is stock. I can only find it on line. Before I order, any insight on this choice?? Bug doesn't need higher temp Dot 4 or 5, and concerned that silicone based synthetics might not be compatible with rubber seals, etc.

My wife's '66 convertible

My wife graduated high school in 1966 and for our 50th wedding anniversary, I told her we'd find her a 1966 convertible which she has always wanted. She previously owned a '70 and '73 bug but never forgot the '66 interest. Found a running '66 locally after several months and after inspection and dri...

brake fluid recommendations

Stock '66 system (single). Brake reservoir split at seams and replacing same. Just realized that I have not purchased any brake fluid for this vehicle and as such, what is the recommended type, brand, etc? Help would be appreciated and yes, I am obviously new at this!

Original wiring diagram for the '66 is available at TheSamba.com. Look under the technical/wiring tab and select year, model, etc. This is for the original 6 volt system but wiring should be same as 12 volt. Key is the flashers work through a 9 pin control module which is no longer made or available...
It could be as simple as the six 8mm nuts on the oil drain plate need tightening.
But don;t tighten them too tight! (don't ask me how I know!)

Running drops with '68 larger bearings. Tires are 165-80R (15) on stock rims and no interference although close to being on edge of fender.

I have been out of town and not had a chance to see if the conversion kit works. The wiring diagram is fairly simple but I haven't connected anything yet. Will let you know what happens when I do!

I had a similar problem when re-wiring a new turn signal unit and it turned out to be a ground issue. Check to ensure you are connected correctly to the turn signal box and that the light housing is grounded. You can check that by using a jumper from the housing to ground. Also ensure the bulb is in...

from the charts I have found, looks like your type 1 was made in late '65 and the motor in 7/66. not sure that helps but best I can do.

found replacement box but not available at this time so went with conversion kit to modern relay. fixing to do the wiring this weekend as it is pretty straight forward. if this works, could do away with black box problems for good!

check your ground wires and ensure they are indeed connected. sounds like a common ground is not making contact.
